Immortal Romance

Immortal Romance is Microgaming’s vampire slot from 2011 and one of the games that built the studio’s reputation online. The theme is gothic romance told through four characters — Amber, Troy, Michael and Sarah — each with a short piece of story attached and a free spin mode of their own. It is remembered as much for its artwork and soundtrack as for the reels, and it is still one of the more recognisable titles in the older half of most lobbies.

How It Plays

Five reels and three rows, with wins paid on 243 ways instead of fixed paylines. Any three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels, counting from the leftmost reel, pay wherever they happen to sit vertically, so there is no line pattern to follow and nothing to switch on or off.

A spin always covers all 243 ways, and the stake is built from a coin value and a bet level rather than a number of lines. That keeps the structure of a spin identical from the smallest setting to the largest — only the cost changes. The exact minimum and maximum depend on the casino’s configuration and currency, and both are shown in the bet panel before you spin.

Symbols

The wild is the Immortal Romance logo, and it substitutes for every symbol except the scatter. The scatter is the lion door knocker from the mansion door, and it is the symbol that opens the bonus. The four characters — Amber, Troy, Michael and Sarah — are the high-paying symbols, and stylised playing card values from ten to ace fill the low end.

Because wins run across ways rather than lines, a single spin can pay the same symbol in several shapes at once, and stacked characters on more than one reel are where the larger base game payouts come from. Symbol values are listed in the game’s information panel.

Bonus Feature

The main feature is the Chamber of Spins, triggered by three or more scatters anywhere on the reels. Rather than one free spin round it holds four, and they open in sequence as you keep triggering the feature: Amber’s is available from the first trigger, Troy’s opens after five, Michael’s after ten and Sarah’s after fifteen. The game keeps that count for you, so the later chambers are something you work towards over many sessions rather than something you choose on day one.

Amber’s chamber is ten free spins with wins multiplied by five. Troy’s is fifteen spins with vampire bats that fly across the reels and turn symbols wild. Michael’s is twenty spins with Rolling Reels — winning symbols vanish, the symbols above drop into the gaps, and a multiplier climbs with each consecutive win inside the same spin. Sarah’s is twenty-five spins with the Wild Vine, which creeps over the reels and turns symbols wild as it goes.

Outside the free spins there is Wild Desire, which can fire at random on any base game spin. Between one and five reels turn completely wild and the spin is settled with them in place. Nothing builds up to it and nothing signals it in advance — it either happens on that spin or it does not.

Controls

The panel sits below the reels: coin value, bet level, a spin button and the total cost of the spin shown alongside. Since the game pays on ways, there is no line selector — changing the coin or the level changes the price of the whole spin at once.

Autoplay runs a chosen number of automatic spins and can be set to stop on conditions such as a win above a size you pick, a feature triggering, or the balance crossing a limit. The exact wording, and the maximum number of spins you can queue, depend on which client version the casino runs. There is no gamble round after a win.

Every game also carries an information panel with its rules and its return-to-player figure for the build running here. That panel is the accurate source; a number copied from elsewhere may describe a different build — see how to read RTP.

Pros and Cons

Immortal Romance is a high-volatility game with almost all of its interest concentrated in the Chamber of Spins. The base game is plain — a wild, a scatter, 243 ways and the occasional Wild Desire — and long stretches of it pass without much happening. What you are playing towards is the free spins, and in particular the later chambers with their Rolling Reels and wild features.

That suits a player who returns to one game across many sessions and likes the idea of unlocking something. It suits far less a short visit or a small balance: the fifteen triggers that open Sarah’s chamber can take a very long time to accumulate, and there is no point at which the game becomes due — every spin is settled on its own, independent of everything that came before it. The atmosphere, the character stories and the soundtrack are a genuine part of the appeal, and the game has aged better in presentation than in mechanics.

What works
  • 243 ways removes the line pattern — adjacent matching symbols simply pay
  • Four separate free spin modes instead of one repeated round
  • Wild Desire can turn whole reels wild on any base game spin
  • Strong theme, artwork and soundtrack, and it runs well on mobile
What to know
  • The later chambers take many triggers to unlock
  • The base game is thin between features
  • High volatility means long stretches with nothing landing
  • No gamble round and no jackpot

Questions

How are the free spins triggered?
Three or more lion door knocker scatters anywhere on the reels open the Chamber of Spins. You then pick from the chambers you have unlocked so far.
How do I unlock the other chambers?
By triggering the free spins repeatedly. Amber’s chamber is open from the first trigger, Troy’s after five, Michael’s after ten and Sarah’s after fifteen. The game keeps the count rather than resetting it each session.
What is Wild Desire?
A random base game feature. Without warning, between one and five reels turn fully wild and the spin pays with them in place. It is not tied to any combination of symbols and cannot be triggered deliberately.
Does a long losing run mean a bonus is close?
No. Each spin is an independent event and the reels carry nothing over from the spins before. The only thing the game counts is how many times you have triggered the free spins, and that decides which chambers are available — not what the next spin does.
Where do I check the symbol values and game rules?
In the game’s own information panel, opened from the menu beside the reels. It lists the symbol payouts, the ways structure and the feature rules for the build the casino is running.
